Elizabeth Armstrong

Elizabeth Armstrong (often known as Liz Armstrong) is a British artist best known for work centred on equine subjects, drawing on close observation of horses and the culture surrounding racing and breeding. Her practice focuses on movement, rhythm, and the physical presence of the horse, often balancing figurative clarity with expressive use of colour and line. Armstrong is closely associated with the Newmarket and Cambridgeshire area, where the landscape and traditions of the racing world have provided a sustained source of subject matter. Her work has included commissions connected to the thoroughbred industry, notably for Shadwell Stud, and she has exhibited paintings and prints that reflect both the spectacle and discipline of equestrian life. She worked with the Curwen Studio at Chilford, producing lithographs including the Riders in the Sky series (2009). These prints translate her equine imagery into graphic form, emphasising movement and atmosphere while retaining the immediacy of her drawing.
