Peter Baer

(1924-1996)

Peter Baer was a Berlin-born British printmaker, artist, and teacher who became an important figure in post-war British print culture, both through his own work and through his role enabling other artists’ editions. After his family fled Germany, he grew up in London and later trained at the Central School of Arts & Crafts. Baer is closely associated with the Curwen Studio, where he worked as a printer of lithographs in the early 1960s and assisted with the day-to-day running of the studio at Plaistow. He was part of the circle around Stanley Jones and the studio’s founders, and sources record his connection to Jones through Curwen’s early years. Alongside his studio work, Baer developed a substantial practice as an artist-printmaker from the late 1960s, producing etchings and other prints and exhibiting in London, including at the Curwen Gallery. He also taught printmaking for many years, notably at Hammersmith and Chelsea Schools of Art, and was remembered as an inspiring teacher as well as a master printer.
