Paul Hogarth OBE, RA

(1917-2001)

Paul Hogarth was a British artist, illustrator, and printmaker renowned for his energetic draughtsmanship and evocative depictions of cities and landscapes around the world. Educated at Saint Martin’s School of Art, he served in the Second World War before establishing an international reputation through illustration, painting, and printmaking. He was elected a Royal Academician in 1974 and was appointed CBE in 1984 for services to art. Hogarth is particularly celebrated for his travel imagery and literary illustration, notably his work for editions of The Pickwick Papers, Bleak House, and The Rime of the Ancient Mariner. His work combines fluid line, atmospheric colour, and a strong sense of movement, capturing both the architecture and character of the places he visited. At Curwen Studio, Hogarth produced lithographs with Stanley Jones depicting scenes from across the world, including Greek landscapes, Sydney Harbour, and Taos in New Mexico.
