Stanley Jones MBE

(1933- 2023)

Stanley Jones was a British master printer, artist, and co- Director of Curwen Studio and later Curwen Chilford Prints. Born in Wigan, Lancashire, he studied at Wigan School of Art before winning a scholarship to the Slade School of Fine Art in 1954, where he developed an early interest in lithography under tutors including Ceri Richards. After graduating in 1956 he continued his lithographic training in Paris at the École des Beaux-Arts and Atelier Patris in Montparnasse. In 1958, with the support of Robert Erskine and the Curwen Press, Jones established Curwen Studio in Plaistow, East London. Under his direction the Studio became central to the revival of original lithography in Britain, encouraging artists to work collaboratively with printers and directly with the medium itself. He worked with artists including Barbara Hepworth, Henry Moore, David Hockney, John Piper, Paula Rego, and Elisabeth Frink. The Studio moved to Chilford Hall, Cambridgeshire, in 1989, becoming Curwen Chilford Prints and expanding into screenprinting and etching. Alongside his studio practice, Jones taught lithography at the Slade from 1958 to 1998 and later helped establish the Curwen Print Study Centre as an educational charity dedicated to preserving fine art printmaking skills. He was awarded an MBE for services to printmaking in 2000.
