David Remfry RA

(b. 1942)

David Remfry is a British painter and printmaker best known for large-scale watercolours depicting dancers, performers, musicians, and scenes from urban nightlife. Born in Worthing, Sussex, he studied at Hull College of Art and the Royal College of Art in London. He later lived and worked for many years in New York, where the city’s club culture and performance scene became a major influence on his work. He was elected a Royal Academician in 2006. Remfry’s work is characterised by fluid draughtsmanship, elongated figures, and an interest in movement and performance. Alongside painting and drawing, he has produced lithographs and screenprints that extend the immediacy and rhythmic qualities of his watercolours into printmaking.
