Rosemary Simmons (Rosura Jones)
(b. 1932)
Rosemary Simmons is a British printmaker, writer, editor, and curator who trained at Chelsea School of Art. She played an important role in the development and promotion of British printmaking through both her own practice and her work within the wider print community. Simmons ran the Curwen Gallery and was Studio Manager at the Curwen Studio in the 1960s. Alongside her printmaking practice, she became the founder and editor of Printmaking Today, writing extensively on lithography, etching, relief printing, and contemporary graphic arts. Through her publishing and editorial work she helped document and support the revival of artist-led printmaking in Britain during the later twentieth century. She is an honorary member of both the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers and the Printmakers’ Council. A longstanding supporter of Curwen Print Study Centre, Simmons established the Rosemary Simmons Bursary in Stone Lithography to help preserve and encourage the continued practice of traditional stone lithography, a process she regarded as increasingly endangered.
