Albany Wiseman

Albany Wiseman was a British painter, printmaker, and illustrator known for expressive figurative works, portraits, and landscape paintings. Born in London, he studied at Beckenham School of Art and the Royal College of Art, where contemporaries included Peter Blake and Frank Auerbach. He later taught at the Royal College of Art and became an important figure in post-war British figurative painting. He was elected a Royal Academician in 1987. Wiseman worked across painting, drawing, illustration, and printmaking, producing portraits, travel scenes, and literary subjects characterised by energetic brushwork and strong colour. He also completed commissions for theatre design, murals, and public projects, and illustrated numerous books during his career.
