Kyffin Williams OBE, RA

(1918- 2006)

Kyffin Williams was a Welsh painter and printmaker best known for expressive landscapes of Wales, particularly Snowdonia and Anglesey. Born on Anglesey, he studied at the Slade School of Fine Art in London under Randolph Schwabe. After periods teaching art in London schools, he devoted himself fully to painting and became one of the most recognisable Welsh artists of the twentieth century. He was elected a Royal Academician in 1974 and knighted in 1999 for services to the arts. Williams’ work is characterised by heavily worked surfaces, dramatic skies, and vigorous brushwork, often depicting the mountains, farms, chapels, and coastline of North Wales. Alongside landscape painting he also produced notable portraits and drawings.
