Description
Solar Plate printmaking uses a metal plate coated in a light sensitive polymer to create either a relief printing plate or an intaglio printing plate. On this two-day course you will learn how to create both types of plate using the exposure unit and outside in natural sunlight and how to develop the plates in water.
Using hand-drawn and photographic artwork as well as found objects and natural materials, you will be able to explore the delicate sensitivity and potential of this non-toxic technique to capture intricate details, alongside experimenting with blind embossing, masking and combining plates. By the end of the course you will have at least 10 prints to take home.
Course structure
• Explanation of the technique with examples.
• Learn how to prepare artwork from your drawings, photographs and found materials
• Expose, develop and post-harden your plate.
• Make both an intaglio and a relief solar plate.
• Preparation of paper.
• Learn inking technique and print single colour and multi coloured prints.
• Incorporate techniques such as monoprinting and chîne collé to create exciting intricate images.
• Print your plates using etching presses.
Experience level
• Suitable for Beginners and those looking to extend skills in Solar Plate.
Pre-course information
Some advance preparation of artwork will be needed, image preparation notes will be sent 2 weeks prior to the course date

Full payment of the course fee is required when booking a place. A reserved place is not secure until full payment has been received.
If for any reason you are unable to attend, we will refund monies paid minus a £20 admin fee, as long as you cancel your place more than 1 month before the course start date.
Course transfers are at the discretion of Curwen Print Study Centre. Curwen Print Study Centre reserves the right to cancel courses – a full refund will be made in these circumstances.
For CPSC Certificate course
Payment for Term 1 is required when booking a place. A reserved place is not secure until this payment has been received. Payments for Terms 2 & 3 will be due at the end of the previous term. Payments for Terms 2 & 3 will be due before the first day of each term.
If for any reason prior to the commencement of the course you are unable to attend, we will refund monies paid minus a £20.00 admin fee, as long as you cancel your place more than 1 month before the course start date. Once you start the course on Term 1 you have committed to all 3 terms. Course transfers are at the discretion of Curwen Print Study Centre.
Curwen Print Study Centre reserves the right to cancel courses – a full refund will be made in these circumstances.
