Japanese Woodblock with Ralph Kiggell ARE

Ralph Kiggell originally studied in the early 1990s at the atelier of Toshi Yoshida, son of Hiroshi Yoshida, where he learned the fundamentals of the traditional water-based Japanese woodblock technique, known today as mokuhanga. He was later able to learn more contemporary woodblock methods in Kyoto with Akira Kurosaki, before continuing his studies to MA level at Tama Art University, Tokyo. Ralph’s work is held in many private and public collections, including the British Library & the Ashmolean Museum.
On this two-day course we will explore the basics of the classic art and craft of Japanese water-based woodblock printing, which is non-toxic and does not need a press.
Course structure
• Introductory talk and looking at examples of Ralph’s original work.
• Introduction to the tools, materials and basic methods used in mokuhanga.
• Learn about block preparation and how to cut the blocks with a range of knives.
• How to mix and apply water-based pigments with horse-hair brushes to blocks.
• How to prepare and dampen Japanese washi paper.
• How to register prints using the Kento mark, and print by hand with a baren.
• Embrace discovery and experimentation along the way!

No previous experience necessary.

Full payment of the course fee is required when booking a place. A reserved place is not secure until full payment has been received.
If for any reason you are unable to attend, we will refund monies paid minus a £20 admin fee, as long as you cancel your place more than 1 month before the course start date.
Course transfers are at the discretion of Curwen Print Study Centre. Curwen Print Study Centre reserves the right to cancel courses – a full refund will be made in these circumstances.
For CPSC Certificate course
Payment for Term 1 is required when booking a place. A reserved place is not secure until this payment has been received. Payments for Terms 2 & 3 will be due at the end of the previous term. Payments for Terms 2 & 3 will be due before the first day of each term.
If for any reason prior to the commencement of the course you are unable to attend, we will refund monies paid minus a £20.00 admin fee, as long as you cancel your place more than 1 month before the course start date. Once you start the course on Term 1 you have committed to all 3 terms. Course transfers are at the discretion of Curwen Print Study Centre.
Curwen Print Study Centre reserves the right to cancel courses – a full refund will be made in these circumstances.
